Film: 18 IUS Soli

Documentarian Fred Kuwornu’s film 18 IUS Soli recounts the experience of young adults born and raised in Italy but with origins in other parts of the world–Asia, South America, Africa. Children of immigrants, they study in Italy, they speak Italian and dialects, and most have never been to their parents’ country nor do they necessarily speak the parents’ home language.

Yet they are not recognized Italian citizens like everyone else. To obtain Italian citizenship, they must wait until the age of 18 and then undergo a long and complicated bureaucratic process, which does not always end with a positive outcome for the applicant, resulting in serious and unavoidable problems of social isolation and identity confusion. Discussion with Fred Kuwornu after the screening.
