BASILICATË: A Celebration of Lucanian Culture in the World

The Calandra Institute is proud to host the exhibition “BASILICATË: A Celebration of Lucanian Culture in the World,” which examines emigration from the Southern Italian region of Basilicata to Argentina, the United States, and Uruguay.  The exhibit features a unique installation design that will be created in situ using cardboard moving boxes symbolizing the migration process. The exhibit highlights four aspects of the Lucanian diaspora: language, cuisine, domestic spaces, and religious rituals. The exhibit is a truly transnational project because in addition to opening in New York City in the gallery space of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, it will subsequently be on view in Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Turin.

After the opening on Thursday, August 22, the exhibition will be accessible during business hours, 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, until its closing date September 27.

The exhibit is made possible by the Federazione Circoli e Associazioni dei Lucani in Piemonte, thanks to the support of the Basilicata Region, the coordination of the Centro dei Lucani nel Mondo Nino Calice, and the artistic direction of the Architecture of Shame group and in collaboration with Federazione Lucana d’America and other Associations of Lucanians in United States.
